Coinbase’s Oct. 30 deadline ends EEA USDT support

Coinbase will end retail support in the EEA for USDT and 13 other tokens on Oct. 30, 2026. Remaining balances will be converted automatically.

Coinbase will end support for USDT and 13 other tokens for retail customers in the European Economic Area on Oct. 30, 2026. Any affected balance left on the platform will be converted automatically.

The affected assets are USDT, PAX, PYUSD, GUSD, GYEN, DAI, BUST, UST, RAI, PAXG, MUSD, USD1, USDS and TGBP. Coinbase has already restricted buying, selling and swapping these assets for EEA retail users. Withdrawals remain available before the deadline.

Coinbase will convert remaining balances at the market rate at the time of the transaction. USDC will be used where suitable. If it is not suitable, the balance may be converted into another supported cryptocurrency or fiat currency.

The conversion will be a one-time transaction and may be treated as a taxable event in some jurisdictions. Customers are responsible for determining any tax obligations that result from the conversion.

Coinbase has warned customers not to send the affected assets to the platform after Oct. 30. Such assets will not be credited, traded, converted or transferred, and will not be included in the automatic conversion. Recovery may be available through Coinbase’s unsupported-crypto process where technically possible, but it is not guaranteed.

The deadline follows the end of the European Union’s transitional period for stablecoin issuers on July 1, 2026. Coinbase said the period was not extended. The European Securities and Markets Authority then gave crypto platforms three months to remove stablecoins whose issuers had not received authorization under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, known as MiCA.

USDC, issued by Circle, remains supported for EEA customers because Circle is authorized under MiCA. USDT remains the world’s largest stablecoin, with a market capitalization of about $180.3 billion, compared with roughly $71.3 billion for USDC, according to CoinGecko data.

Customers who withdraw an affected asset must use a network supported by that token. Coinbase has warned that transfers sent over the wrong network may not be recoverable. Customers who leave their balances on the platform will receive the automatic conversion.

The restriction applies to EEA retail customers and does not remove USDT from Coinbase’s global platform. The token remains available on exchanges outside the region. In October, Coinbase’s Irish unit was fined €3.25 million over e-money safeguarding failures.
