Bithumb probes possible data leak after internal system hack
Bithumb is investigating whether member data was exposed after hackers breached its internal mobile system Tuesday. The exchange said customer crypto assets were not accessible.
South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb is investigating a possible leak of member information after hackers compromised its internal mobile system earlier this week.
Bithumb detected the breach Tuesday in the platform employees use for internal communications. It notified the Korea Internet & Security Agency and the Personal Information Protection Commission the same day and began assessing the scope of the incident.
The investigation is focused on whether member data was exposed. “We are analyzing the exact scope, including the possibility of member information being involved,” Bithumb said. The exchange planned to issue an official announcement Wednesday.
Bithumb’s internal work system is separate from its virtual asset trading platform. Customer cryptocurrency holdings could not be accessed through the compromised system, according to the exchange.
The incident follows cyberattacks against several South Korean financial companies. Financial Supervisory Service Governor Lee Chan-jin said Wednesday that 16 financial firms in the country had been targeted as of Oct. 14.
Mirae Asset Global Investments blocked unusual external access to some web systems and opened an investigation. The asset manager reported that investor information was not affected.
Daishin Securities said personal and credit information belonging to 38,490 customers had been leaked in a separate cyberattack.
