Cardano activates x402 for AI payments as ADA hits four-month high

Cardano activated x402 on mainnet to allow AI agents to send and receive ADA payments. ADA’s price rose to a four-month high after the update.

Cardano activated the x402 protocol on its mainnet, enabling software agents and autonomous services to initiate and receive ADA transactions without a human signing each transfer.

The protocol-level change defines how agent-controlled addresses and payment messages are handled. Network validators have begun processing transactions that follow the x402 specification, allowing automated systems to use Cardano’s payment rails directly.

Developers designed the specification to support programmatic payments for uses such as automated data marketplaces, metered API access and machine-to-machine commerce. The x402 rules create a standard way for wallet logic and smart contracts to operate when a non-human actor controls funds.

Technically, the specification clarifies requirements for transaction signing and account management in agent-controlled flows. Wallet providers and infrastructure teams need to update client software and security models to support agent-managed keys or delegated signing schemes that conform to x402.

Market response followed the activation: ADA’s market price reached a four-month high and trading volume increased after the update, as some participants bought the token in reaction to the protocol change.

Cardano introduced smart contract capability in 2021 and has issued multiple upgrades since. ADA is used for transaction fees, staking and value transfer; the x402 change allows those functions to be used by automated systems as counterparties in economic activity.

Developers and node operators are advised to follow official client releases and documentation to ensure compatibility with the new specification and to update software according to the published guidance.
