ZachXBT Labels Canada Worst Country for Crypto Fraud
Blockchain investigator ZachXBT published a ranking naming Canada the worst country for crypto fraud, citing police failures and identifying Toronto as a fraud hotspot.
In late August 2026, blockchain investigator ZachXBT published a ranking of jurisdictions he considers worst for crypto crime victims, placing Canada at the top.
The list placed the United Kingdom second and India third. Nigeria, Algeria, Bangladesh and Morocco were also included among the worst-performing jurisdictions.
ZachXBT said his assessment reflected repeated cases in which law enforcement either declined to act after receiving evidence or made errors that harmed victims’ chances of recovery. He identified Toronto as a city-level hotspot and wrote that some Canadian agencies seized assets from users who were not proven to be involved in criminal activity.
On his Telegram channel he wrote: “Canada is the type to receive a full report on threat actors from The Com, ransomware, or home invasion robberies with evidence used to prosecute cases in multiple jurisdictions and still not assist victims while claiming it’s a first world country.” He also wrote: “Toronto is currently one of the hot spots globally for fraud.”
ZachXBT detailed several examples to support his ranking. He described a phishing operator whose reports were ignored by local police before the actor moved into high-value ransomware. He described a case in which an over-the-counter exchange tied to Iran was allegedly used to launder funds taken in a home invasion and investigators did not pursue inquiries. He also said assets linked to Tradeogre were seized from users without proof of criminal involvement.
He criticized Indian law enforcement as “incompetent,” citing episodes when officials asked for help recovering funds linked to the Lazarus Group and incidents in which exchange founders were arrested after authorities confused legitimate domains with phishing sites. He did not publish a full list of every case but said his examples reflected broader patterns.
In June he wrote that he was declining to assist victims from Canada. He announced plans to block access to his forthcoming support website for countries he ranks as low-quality, posting: “When my website launches soon, we will block all low-quality countries from access to my support.” He also accused one nation on his list of using bots to react to his post.
ZachXBT has previously helped victims recover millions in stolen crypto and is known for publishing research on blockchain tracing techniques. His ranking has drawn attention within the crypto community and prompted questions about cross-border coordination among private investigators, exchanges and law enforcement.
He urged victims to be cautious about where they seek help and wrote that differences in investigative capacity and priorities can affect a victim’s chances of recovering stolen funds.
