YouTube puts AI labels on players, auto-tags photoreal AI videos
YouTube will place AI-disclosure labels on video players and automatically tag videos its systems detect as photorealistically AI-generated, even if creators do not disclose AI use.
YouTube announced May 27, 2026 that it will place AI-disclosure labels directly on video players and automatically tag videos its systems detect as photorealistic or meaningfully AI-altered, even when creators do not disclose AI use.
Under the updated system, labels for long-form videos will appear below the player and Shorts will show overlays on the video itself. The company described the change as a single-label format for photorealistic or ‘meaningfully altered’ content to give viewers quick context.
Automatic labeling will trigger when YouTube’s detection systems find evidence of significant photorealistic AI use and a creator has not specified whether AI was used. Creators can dispute labels through YouTube Studio. Labels will remain permanent for videos produced with YouTube’s own AI tools or for files that include metadata identifying them as AI-generated.
YouTube stated the labeling changes will not affect how videos are recommended or whether they can be monetized.
The announcement coincides with Google’s wider rollout of AI editing and remixing tools across YouTube. At Google I/O earlier in May 2026, Google introduced Gemini Omni, a multimodal model that combines Gemini with media-generation systems such as Veo, Nano Banana and Genie.
Google and YouTube are integrating those capabilities into features that let users restyle clips, insert themselves into footage and create new variations of other creators’ videos. YouTube framed the label update as an effort to make disclosures simpler for creators and clearer for viewers.
