Trump disclosed 327 stock buys a day before tariff pause
President Trump disclosed 327 stock purchases on April 8, 2025, valued at up to $12.8 million, one day before a tariff pause and a 9.5% S&P 500 gain.
President Trump’s annual financial disclosure filed with the Office of Government Ethics lists 327 stock purchases made April 8, 2025, reported in ranges that put their maximum combined value at $12.8 million. The transactions appear in a 927-page spreadsheet-style filing and were not previously reported.
Federal ethics rules require senior officials to report securities transactions within 45 days on periodic transaction reports known as 278-T forms. The April 8 purchases were not listed on 278-Ts and instead appeared in the annual report more than 14 months after the trades. The disclosure notes that the filer paid late filing fees related to transactions not previously reported on 278-Ts and states the statutory penalty for missing the 278-T deadline is capped at $200.
The 327 purchases include shares in Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon and Alphabet. Each of those holdings is listed in the filing at values of up to $250,000. Because the disclosure reports ranges rather than exact amounts, the actual total is likely lower than the $12.8 million ceiling.
On April 9, 2025, the president announced a pause on a set of tariffs. The S&P 500 closed that day up 9.5%, one of the index’s largest single-day gains, with technology stocks among the leaders of the advance.
The White House says the president’s assets are held in fully discretionary accounts managed by independent third-party financial institutions. The annual disclosure does not identify who placed the April 8 trades, and no government agency has accused the president of trading on advance knowledge of the tariff announcement.
Craig Holman of Public Citizen called for a fuller public accounting of financial holdings and transactions by senior officials, arguing that timely disclosure allows closer scrutiny.
The April trades appear alongside other entries in the 2025 financial disclosures, which report at least $1.4 billion in cryptocurrency-related receipts tied to memecoin royalties and World Liberty Financial token sales. The administration has pursued modernization of federal finance and launched a children’s savings program opened July 4 that accepts donations of publicly traded stock.
Critics noted that delayed reporting and a low maximum penalty can leave the public without timely visibility into potential conflicts when policy decisions affect markets that overlap with an official’s investments.
