Tom Lee: 2% Bitcoin stake swelled to 85% of portfolio
Tom Lee says an initial 2% Bitcoin allocation expanded to 85% of his personal portfolio after he did not rebalance or trim gains.
Tom Lee, co-founder and head of research at Fundstrat Global Advisors, told an audience in a recent public appearance that an initial 2% allocation to Bitcoin grew to 85% of his personal portfolio after sustained price gains and a decision not to trim the position or rebalance.
He described how limited selling and no scheduled rebalancing allowed the Bitcoin stake to outpace other holdings whose returns lagged. Over time the best-performing asset became a growing share of total portfolio value.
Lee explained the shift changed the portfolio’s risk profile by concentrating exposure in a single asset class. He urged investors to set clear allocation limits and to define rules for taking profits or rebalancing back to target weights.
Lee noted that many investors underestimate how quickly a small position can expand after large gains. He said regular rebalancing enforces the discipline of selling a portion of winners and buying assets that have lagged.
“A small position can quickly become the largest holding if it’s left to run,” Lee said.
Bitcoin has produced substantial returns over the past decade and has also shown large price swings. Financial advisers commonly recommend modest target allocations for high-volatility assets and periodic rebalancing. Fundstrat provides research on digital assets and traditional markets.
Lee added that the episode reinforced his view that portfolio rules matter as much as initial allocations and recommended specific tools such as percentage thresholds for trimming or calendar-based rebalancing to prevent unintended concentration.
