Thailand approves rules for local Bitcoin and Ether ETFs
Thailand’s SEC has finalized rules allowing Bitcoin and Ether ETFs to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand from Oct. 16, 2026.
Thailand’s Securities and Exchange Commission has finalized rules allowing exchange-traded funds tied to Bitcoin and Ether to list on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. The rules take effect Oct. 16, 2026.
The framework will give Thai investors access to the two largest cryptocurrencies through the local stock market. Crypto ETFs must be listed exclusively on the Stock Exchange of Thailand. Products linked to overseas crypto ETFs, including depositary receipts, will not be allowed initially.
Thai brokers will remain barred from arranging investments in overseas crypto ETFs for retail investors. The restriction will not apply to institutional investors and ultra-high-net-worth individuals.
The SEC has amended its rules to allow Thai mutual funds and private funds to invest in crypto ETFs established in Thailand. Previously, those funds could invest only in foreign crypto ETFs.
The new ETFs must be passive funds that track the price of a single cryptocurrency. Each fund must maintain average net exposure of at least 80% of its net asset value to that cryptocurrency during each accounting year.
Brokers will not be allowed to provide margin loans for purchases of crypto ETFs. Fund assets must be held with digital-asset custodians regulated by the SEC. Investors must receive information about the products and confirm that they understand the risks before trading.
Bitkub Group co-founder Attakrit Chimphlapibul pointed to the U.S. launches of spot Bitcoin and Ether ETFs as examples of products that gave institutional and retail investors easier access to digital assets.
The SEC consulted on the proposed principles in April and May and on draft regulations in August and September. Most respondents supported the proposals, the regulator said.
