Tether launches self-custodial mobile wallet for USDT, BTC

Tether released tether.wallet for iOS and Android, supporting USDT, XAUt, USAT and Bitcoin onchain and Lightning; fees can be paid in the asset sent.
Tether has launched tether.wallet, a self-custodial mobile app that supports USDT, XAUt (XAUT), USAT and Bitcoin. The wallet accepts on-chain Bitcoin and Lightning Network payments and lets users pay transaction fees in the same asset they send.
The app is available for iOS and Android. Tether says transactions are signed locally on users’ devices so private keys and recovery phrases remain under user control. USDT and XAUT are supported on Ethereum, Polygon, Plasma and Arbitrum. USAT is available at launch on Ethereum only.
Bitcoin functionality is offered both onchain and via the Lightning Network. Tether states that users can settle network fees in the token being transferred rather than requiring separate gas or network tokens.
The wallet builds on its open-source Wallet Development Kit, released in late 2024, which was designed to help developers integrate non-custodial wallets for USDT and Bitcoin into apps, websites and devices.
The wallet introduces human-readable @tether.me usernames so users do not need to copy long addresses. Some observers have raised concerns that such centralized identifiers could create trade-offs for self-custody and security. Tether has reiterated that all transactions are signed locally.
Tether also states users can “safely back up” private keys to the cloud. The company has not clarified whether cloud backup is optional or mandatory or whether users can disable the feature. Some users and security observers have previously criticized cloud-based key recovery options for weakening self-custody guarantees when they lack clear user controls or strong safeguards.
The wallet is available to download from Tether’s website and the major mobile app stores. Tether did not immediately respond to requests for additional details on backup settings, user control options or how @tether.me usernames will be managed.
