Base to Launch 1:1-Backed Tokenized Equities Imminently

Base will launch 1:1-backed tokenized equities imminently as it shifts focus to trading, payments, AI agents and tokenized assets, Jesse Pollak wrote on X.
Jesse Pollak, creator of Coinbase’s Ethereum layer-2 network Base, wrote on X that the platform is close to launching 1:1-backed tokenized equities and that engineers are finalizing checks and compliance before the release.
Responding to a question about timing, Pollak wrote: ‘Imminent — dotting i’s and crossing t’s, but should be very soon.’ He did not provide a specific calendar date.
A 1:1-backed tokenized equity is a digital token that corresponds to one share of a conventional security held in custody off-chain. The token allows trading and settlement on a blockchain while the underlying share remains with a regulated custodian.
Pollak said the Base team has shifted priorities away from earlier emphasis on creator and social apps toward financial use cases, listing trading, payments, AI-driven agents and tokenized assets as current areas of focus. He acknowledged the network had ‘made a wrong bet’ by prioritizing creator, content and messaging apps initially.
Pollak pointed to Robinhood Chain as an example of an EVM environment that implemented tokenized equities successfully, and indicated Base aims to provide comparable functionality and market infrastructure.
Launching tokenized equities typically requires custody arrangements, regulatory compliance, smart contract audits and integrations with trading and custody partners. Pollak’s comment that the team is ‘dotting i’s and crossing t’s’ indicates those operational and compliance elements are being completed before the public rollout.
Base is an Ethereum Layer 2 developed by Coinbase to lower transaction costs and increase throughput for decentralized applications. Pollak’s remarks mark a continuation of the network’s adjustment toward products linked to financial markets and asset tokenization.
Market participants have shown interest in tokenized securities for potential benefits such as faster settlement and fractional ownership. Base did not provide additional technical documentation or a launch date at the time of Pollak’s post.
