Sui mainnet stalls for second day; SUI drops 20%
Sui mainnet stalled a second day after a crash bug in the 1.72 release paused activity; SUI fell about 20% this week to roughly $0.89.
Sui’s mainnet experienced a second consecutive day of stalled activity on Friday after a crash bug in the 1.72 release’s gas-charging logic led validators to pause processing. Engineers applied a patch on Thursday that briefly restored service following an earlier outage.
The network posted on X early Friday: “Sui mainnet is currently experiencing a network stall. Network activity may be paused at this time.” That message remained live for more than two hours while engineers investigated.
Later updates stated that activity had resumed and attributed the disruption to the crash bug in the gas-charging logic introduced by the 1.72 release. The network added that a full incident review will be published in the coming days.
It was not clear whether the second day’s stall was caused by the same bug or by the patch deployed on Thursday. A representative for the network and a representative for Mysten Labs did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
The outages affected market performance. The SUI token traded near $0.89 after falling about 20% over the week and roughly 2% in the prior 24 hours. That price is more than 83% below its January 2025 peak of $5.35 and puts SUI’s market capitalization near $3.6 billion. Data from CoinGecko placed SUI among the five worst performing assets last week among the top 100 coins by market cap.
Sui launched in 2023 by Mysten Labs and raised $300 million in a 2022 Series B that valued the company at about $2 billion. The network has experienced multiple major outages this year, including a six-hour stall in January.
Engineers plan to publish a full incident report explaining the root cause and planned mitigations. Validators and developers continue to monitor mainnet activity as fixes are applied and a postmortem is prepared.
