Sui outages tied to gas logic clash and validator bug

Sui mainnet had three outages May 28–29 totaling over 15 hours after release 1.72’s gas-charging logic clashed with a new address-balances feature and a validator randomness-state bug; user funds were not at risk.

Sui’s mainnet experienced three outages on May 28 and 29 that added up to more than 15 hours over roughly 48 hours. The Sui Foundation reported that user funds were not at risk and that no committed transactions were reverted.

Engineers traced the first two outages to crash bugs caused by an interaction between gas-charging routines and a new address-balances feature introduced in release 1.72. The feature changed how balances were tracked and conflicted with existing gas-calculation processes, which caused validator processes to stop.

The third outage occurred on Friday afternoon during a scheduled epoch change. A latent bug in how validators preserve randomness state across restarts produced a validator-level synchronization failure, stalling the network until nodes realigned.

Developers applied an interim repair to bring the network back online and accepted heightened operational risk to restore service quickly while working on a longer-term fix. Engineers are implementing code changes to address both the gas-charging interaction and the randomness-state preservation issue and are moving to strengthen upgrade procedures.

The outages coincided with market movement: SUI’s price fell about 18% over the prior seven days to roughly $0.86, amid broader weakness in crypto markets. The May incidents are the third major reliability event for Sui since mainnet launch in 2023, following a two-hour transaction-scheduling bug in November 2024 and a six-hour consensus divergence in January 2026.
