Solana leader enters Clacton by-election with onchain pledge

Stephen “Cap” Newnham, leader of Solana community group Superteam UK, announced on July 9 he will run as an independent in the Aug. 13 parliamentary by-election in Clacton. He listed five campaign pledges that include onchain political transparency and support for local entrepreneurs, digital and artificial intelligence education, and financial literacy in schools.

Newnham said one pledge with a focus on personal finance can be summed up as “You should own your pension.” He pointed to existing options such as self-invested personal pensions and small self-administered schemes as ways for savers to choose where their pension assets are held. The campaign has not provided details on how blockchain technology would be used to manage pension assets or any proposed changes to pension law.

On transparency, Newnham proposes publishing donations and meetings in plain English and recording them onchain. Publishing records to a blockchain can make them harder to alter once posted, but it would not by itself ensure every donation or meeting is disclosed or solve legal reporting requirements.

Requests for more information about the technical and legal specifics of Newnham’s proposals were not answered before publication.

The by-election was called after Nigel Farage resigned his seat and chose to recontest Clacton. Farage is under a parliamentary standards investigation into whether he should have declared a £5 million personal gift from investor Christopher Harborne. Farage has argued the gift did not need to be declared because it was received before he entered Parliament. He has also faced scrutiny over reported support from George Cottrell; Farage denies wrongdoing and maintains he followed parliamentary rules.

Democracy Club lists 11 prospective candidates for the Clacton contest, including Newnham, Farage and the satirical candidate Count Binface. The local council is expected to confirm the official candidate list on July 17. A recent national Ipsos survey of 1,000 British adults found 33% would prefer Count Binface and 21% would prefer Farage; the poll did not measure voting intentions specifically among Clacton residents.

The Aug. 13 by-election will determine who represents the Clacton constituency for the remainder of the parliamentary term.
