Routing bug pushed Solana close to losing finality
A routing bug in Solana’s validator software cut the network’s safety margin to about 14%, briefly risking loss of finality before a patch restored normal operation.
A routing bug in Solana’s validator software this week misdirected or delayed votes and block proposals on the mainnet, reducing the active voting stake that supports consensus and bringing the network close to losing finality.
Developers traced the problem to the node routing layer that handles gossip and vote message delivery across the cluster. Solana’s Tower BFT consensus requires a supermajority of stake to cast timely votes, so interruptions in message delivery can reduce the ledger’s ability to finalize blocks. Monitoring showed the cluster’s safety margin shrink to roughly 14 percent, a level engineers described as 86 percent of the way to losing finality.
Core engineers released a patch, coordinated validator restarts and recommended a specific client binary to restore correct message routing. Validators completed rolling restarts and finality returned within hours. No loss of user funds has been reported.
Block production continued during the disruption but with higher latency and intermittent failed transactions for some users. Several decentralized applications and wallets reported brief interruptions or elevated error rates until validators applied the patch and voting participation returned to normal.
The Solana Foundation and core contributor teams plan to publish a post-incident report with technical details and mitigation steps. Operators and infrastructure providers have been asked to confirm they are running the updated client, and contributors are exploring further hardening of the routing layer to reduce the chance of recurrence.
