Ripple joins x402 Foundation to add XRP, RLUSD to HTTP payments
Ripple joined the Linux Foundation-backed x402 Foundation as a Premier Member, linking XRP and Ripple USD (RLUSD) to an open HTTP payment standard for AI agents, APIs and apps.
Ripple joined the Linux Foundation-backed x402 Foundation as a Premier Member on July 14, 2026, connecting XRP and Ripple USD (RLUSD) to an open HTTP payment standard for AI agents, APIs and applications. The membership gives Ripple a seat in the protocol’s technical and governance processes and notes compatibility between the XRP Ledger and x402.
The x402 protocol was contributed to the Linux Foundation by Coinbase. It defines a way for software to send and receive payments directly within HTTP interactions, allowing AI agents, APIs and other programs to exchange value alongside data. The protocol is designed to support multiple payment methods, including traditional cards, stablecoins and blockchain assets, and to operate as a vendor-neutral payment layer for machine-to-machine commerce over web requests.
The x402 Foundation launched with 40 members drawn from finance, cloud infrastructure, payments and blockchain sectors. Premier Members include Amazon Web Services, Google, Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, Coinbase, Circle and Ripple, among others. The group is developing the specification under open governance so the standard can be implemented by different platforms and vendors.
Ripple said its infrastructure on the XRP Ledger already supports x402 interactions, enabling transactions using XRP and RLUSD. Markus Infanger, senior vice president of RippleX, noted the company has been building tools and systems to support agentic payments and that x402 support allows agents to transact with XRP and RLUSD today.
Jim Zemlin, chief executive of the Linux Foundation, said the foundation seeks a community-governed standard for payments over HTTP and aims to keep the internet’s payment layer neutral and interoperable by bringing together companies across finance and technology.
Broader use of XRP and RLUSD within x402 will depend on integrations by developers, businesses and AI platforms. The protocol’s support for multiple payment methods means XRP will operate alongside traditional payment rails, other stablecoins and blockchain networks; which methods see meaningful use will be determined by developer adoption and transaction volume.
x402 targets a gap identified as software agents gain the ability to request and purchase digital services automatically. The standard is intended to enable software to pay for APIs, compute, data and services during normal web interactions if developers and service providers implement the protocol. Ripple’s Premier Member status gives the company influence in ongoing technical work and governance discussions within the foundation.
