Nordic AI tool offers evidence on Bitcoin mining emissions
Bitcoin Beyond 66 launched an open-source AI called Bitcoin Evidence Base to generate sourced responses about Bitcoin mining, energy use and environmental impact.
Nordic Bitcoin education platform Bitcoin Beyond 66 recently launched an open-source AI tool named the Bitcoin Evidence Base to produce concise, sourced replies to online criticisms about Bitcoin mining, energy use and environmental impact.
The database accepts written text or links and returns short responses users can share on social media. The tool cites peer-reviewed research and industry data, and routinely references an April 2025 University of Cambridge study that found more than 52% of Bitcoin mining used renewable energy.
The system is built around a communication approach developed by Daniel Batten that the group describes as combining evidence and empathy. The platform offers three reply tones-direct, balanced and soft-and aims to acknowledge elements of truth in a criticism before correcting inaccuracies.
Bitcoin Beyond 66 pointed to a growing body of research included in the repository. The group noted the database contains more than 22 peer-reviewed papers that document environmental effects linked to mining, including studies on grid flexibility and the use of curtailed renewable power, and that it highlights comparisons between Bitcoin’s energy mix and that of the traditional banking sector.
Users can submit academic papers and website links for review before sources are added to the evidence base. The project is open-source, and contributors may help expand and refine the repository of studies and data used by the AI.
Debate over Bitcoin mining’s environmental footprint has continued for more than a decade, with some governments and international bodies raising concerns about carbon emissions. Researchers and industry participants have published recent work showing a larger share of miners operating on lower-carbon and renewable energy sources and shifts in mining location and technology that affect energy use patterns.
The platform provided guidance on tone for those responding to critics, advising responders to educate rather than try to score debate points. “If you’re trying to ‘own’ someone, you’ll trigger their defenses and accomplish nothing,” the group wrote.
The Bitcoin Evidence Base automates citation and formats replies to make evidence easier to share in online discussions. The platform framed the tool as a way to provide fast access to current, peer-reviewed findings while allowing the evidence pool to grow through community contributions.
