BitMEX to close after 11 years on Sept. 23, 2026

BitMEX, a cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, will stop operations on Sept. 23, 2026 after owner HDR Global Trading Limited decided to close the platform following a strategic review.

The company announced the shutdown Thursday and advised users to close positions and withdraw funds during the transition period. In a message to customers, BitMEX wrote: “We want to reassure you that your assets remain fully safe and under your control during this transition period.”

HDR Global did not provide financial details or further explanation in the initial announcement. The notice concentrated on operational steps, the timeline for ending services and guidance for customers rather than the internal factors behind the decision.

BitMEX launched 11 years ago and helped popularize perpetual swap contracts, derivatives that let traders speculate on cryptocurrency prices without fixed expiration dates. The company reported it has not lost customer funds to hacks during its operation.

Users were instructed to close open positions, cancel orders and withdraw balances by Sept. 23. The company noted withdrawals should proceed through the platform’s normal account procedures.

The announcement did not identify any successor platform or indicate whether business assets will be sold or transferred as part of the closure. Further updates may follow as the company implements the shutdown plan and customers complete withdrawals.
