Kalshi Blocks India, Expands Restricted Jurisdictions to 55
Kalshi updated its members’ agreement to block residents of India from accessing the prediction market, raising its total restricted jurisdictions to 55.
Kalshi updated its members’ agreement on Wednesday to add India to its list of restricted jurisdictions. The change blocks residents of India from accessing the platform and brings the total to 55 restricted jurisdictions.
India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued guidance in April urging virtual private network providers to stop facilitating access to what it described as illegal and blocked online betting and prediction market platforms. Kalshi’s update prevents direct access by Indian residents in response to that guidance and to similar enforcement actions in other countries.
Regulators in several countries have restricted access to prediction markets. In May, Spanish authorities blocked access to major prediction sites over local gambling rules. Indonesia blocked one platform after it listed a contract speculating whether President Prabowo Subianto would leave office before the end of his term. Governments in Singapore, Poland, Portugal, Hungary, Ukraine and Brazil have also taken steps to block or prohibit such services.
Contracts tied to sports outcomes and political events have attracted regulatory attention. In January, U.S. lawmakers proposed legislation aimed at limiting political prediction trading by government officials after a user gained more than $400,000 on a contract tied to the removal of Venezuela’s then-president Nicolás Maduro. Kentucky has filed a lawsuit against five prediction market platforms, accusing them of operating unlicensed and illegal sports betting and gambling services.
Kalshi and Polymarket are among the largest platforms in the sector. Data show the two firms handle roughly $3.7 billion and $3.2 billion in weekly trades, respectively. Sports-related contracts are the single largest category, representing about $328 million in daily volume on Kalshi and about $196 million on Polymarket.
Under the updated membership terms, residents of India and the other listed jurisdictions will be blocked from accessing Kalshi.
