Justin Sun’s Liberland awards Vitalik Buterin at ETH Prague

Micronation Liberland, led by Justin Sun, presented Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin its top honor, the First Class Order of Merit of the Star of Liberland, at ETH Prague 2026.

Micronation Liberland presented Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin with its highest state honor, the First Class Order of Merit of the Star of Liberland, at a side event during ETH Prague 2026 in Prague. Liberland President Vít Jedlička presented the decoration.

The Liberland Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the award as recognition of Buterin’s contributions to blockchain technology and his interest in experimenting with new forms of digital governance.

In a video posted online, Buterin thanked the Liberland community and expressed openness to future collaboration: “I look forward to seeing what kinds of synergies we can have between our communities, and whether or not any of the things that have been built can be useful for people there. I just wish you guys the best of luck.”

Founded in 2015, Liberland is a self-declared libertarian micronation on a stretch of disputed land along the Danube River between Croatia and Serbia. No established government recognizes Liberland as a sovereign state. In 2015, founder Vít Jedlička was detained by Croatian authorities after attempting to enter the claimed territory.

Tron founder Justin Sun was elected Liberland prime minister in 2024. Since his election, Sun has promoted Liberland as a platform for blockchain-based governance and has described plans to run some government functions and voting on-chain through merit-based systems.

Liberland has attracted libertarian activists, crypto founders and blockchain developers who are interested in alternative governance arrangements. The project continues to host events, promote membership and experiment with on-chain services.

The award presentation at ETH Prague took place at a side event rather than on an internationally recognized state platform. The Liberland Ministry of Foreign Affairs characterized the accolade as reflecting a shared interest in using decentralized technology to expand individual freedom and to test more responsive governance systems for the digital age.
