Eric Chen, CEO of Injective, warned in a recent podcast that layer-1 blockchains will face growing pressure to sacrifice decentralization for speed and capacity as institutional adoption and agentic AI finance expand.
He said rising demand for faster transactions and larger block space will force networks to make trade-offs among decentralization, security and scalability.
Chen argued centralization is the simplest route because operators can consolidate nodes or appoint a single leader to make block decisions. He cautioned such designs create single points of failure, adding, “If that one server has a certain fault, the entire chain goes down.”
Instead of shortening block times or concentrating control, Injective is examining other ways to increase throughput. Options mentioned include optimizing the blockchain stack and building “scaling venues”—dedicated zones and layer-2 solutions that handle high-demand transactions separately from the base chain. Chen described these steps as efforts to expand capacity without reducing the core attributes of a public blockchain, saying, “It’s essentially about finding scaling opportunities without compromising the fundamental pillars that define what a blockchain is.”
The comments addressed the so-called blockchain trilemma: the idea that security, decentralization and scalability cannot all be maximized at once. Chen framed the choices as a “tug-of-war,” and said different applications may require different architectures so networks can balance performance needs with distributed control.
Supporters of layered approaches argue they can keep the base layer decentralized while moving high-volume activity off the main chain. Critics point out that extra layers introduce new trust assumptions and added complexity.
Chen said the industry will need to test which combinations of design choices work in practice as adoption grows and different chains pursue different balances between speed, capacity and distributed control.
