Indonesia requires finfluencers to hold crypto certification
Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority requires influencers promoting crypto to obtain competency certificates and allows promotions only for assets on authorized exchanges.
Indonesia’s Financial Services Authority (OJK) published Financial Services Authority Regulation No. 6 of 2026 on Wednesday. The regulation requires individuals who promote cryptocurrency and other digital financial assets on social media to obtain competency certification unless they are already subject to a separate licensing requirement.
Promotional material may reference only digital assets listed on exchanges authorized by Indonesian authorities. Any service provider recommended in such promotions must hold a license from the appropriate regulator.
Marketing campaigns that involve influencers must be conducted through regulated financial services businesses. Those firms are responsible for the promotional content and for distributing it through their official communication channels, the regulator’s machine-translated announcement stated.
The regulation requires three elements for public promotions: certified promoters, licensed service providers and distribution through regulated firms’ official channels.
Regulation No. 6 follows regulatory actions in other jurisdictions to tighten oversight of financial influencers. In 2022, guidance in Australia said influencers may require a financial services licence if their content amounts to financial advice or helps arrange transactions. In 2024, UK guidance warned that unauthorized influencers promoting regulated financial products without approval from an authorised firm may commit a criminal offence; regulators coordinated enforcement activity in April 2024 that included account-takedown requests. In 2025, the Philippines introduced crypto-specific marketing restrictions covering endorsements, sponsored content, social media posts, podcasts, livestreams and certain paid educational content, and required crypto service providers to disclose authorised third-party marketers to the national securities regulator.
Influencers and content creators operating in Indonesia must review the new compliance requirements and obtain the competency certification if they are not already licensed. Regulated financial firms that engage influencers must ensure campaigns reference only approved assets and licensed counterparties, and that distribution uses the firms’ official channels.
