Hoskinson: AI upends crypto’s growth metric

Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson warned AI-driven activity can distort on-chain metrics such as transaction counts and active addresses, making them unreliable measures of growth.

Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano and an early Ethereum co-founder, argued in recent public remarks that artificial intelligence has undermined traditional on-chain metrics used to measure cryptocurrency growth.

He identified transaction counts, active addresses and other on-chain volumes as particularly vulnerable to distortion because AI-driven agents can generate or amplify that activity.

According to Hoskinson, AI can create synthetic transactions, operate many wallets in parallel and automate trading or interaction patterns that mimic human use. Those actions can raise headline metrics without reflecting actual economic activity, developer engagement or long-term user retention.

He urged the industry to update its measurement toolkit to separate automated noise from meaningful adoption. Suggested alternatives include tracking value transfers between distinct economic actors, measuring longevity of use and assessing protocol integrations with real-world services.

“Artificial intelligence has destroyed the old metric used to measure cryptocurrency growth,” Hoskinson warned.

His remarks raise questions for exchanges, analysts and protocol teams that rely on quantitative signals. If volumes and wallet counts can be inflated by bots or AI routines, those groups will need indicators tied to economic substance.

Hoskinson has worked in the cryptocurrency industry for more than a decade and led development of Cardano after co-founding Ethereum. The sector has long used a small set of metrics-market capitalization, transaction throughput, total value locked and user-address activity-to compare projects and guide investment and development.
