Greenafrica wins $100K at Hedera Africa hackathon

Greenafrica won the $100,000 top prize at the Hedera Africa Hackathon, which drew more than 45,000 participants and produced over 1,300 project submissions.

The Hashgraph Association and Exponential Science announced on April 29 that Greenafrica captured the $100,000 cross-track champion prize at the 2025 Hedera Africa Hackathon. The multi-hub event ran across 20 African centers and online platforms.

Organizers reported more than 45,000 total participants and roughly 13,000 developers. The competition produced over 1,300 project submissions that used Hedera’s distributed ledger to address infrastructure issues in emerging markets. The hackathon offered a $1 million prize pool across four tracks: on-chain finance and real-world assets; distributed ledger technology for operations; immersive experiences; and AI and decentralized physical infrastructure networks (DePIN).

Greenafrica, a Nigeria-based environmental verification platform that tracks sustainability initiatives, took the top prize. Egypt’s Carboni Renewable Energy Certificate Platform finished second overall. Effisend X Africa, an AI-powered payment routing system originating in Mexico, placed third. Organizers noted many entries focused on practical infrastructure needs such as cross-network payments and secure medical record management.

The Hashgraph Association also launched an investment committee to provide multi-million-dollar commitments to strategic partnerships. The committee is intended to offer capital and mentorship to developers in emerging markets ahead of a planned return of the hackathon in 2026.

Judges evaluated projects on technical design, potential for real-world deployment and alignment with the event’s thematic tracks. The hackathon was co-funded by The Hashgraph Association and Exponential Science, operated by Dar Blockchain and held in partnership with Orange Digital Center. Supporting partners included Sygnum Bank and the Nairobi Securities Exchange.

Kamal Youssefi, president of The Hashgraph Association, described the event as reaching “historic heights, scaling the depths of talent and ambition across the continent and beyond.” Paolo Tasca, executive chairman at Exponential Science, emphasized the role of education in building technical ecosystems, saying, “Any strong, innovative and responsible technical ecosystem begins with education.”
