Grayscale posted on X on July 8 classifying XRP as a ‘global payments’ asset and placing it in a narrative framework that links digital assets to specific financial functions. Grayscale wrote on X, ‘Every asset has its narrative.’ The firm separated XRP from bitcoin’s ‘digital money’ label and ethereum’s ‘world computer’ designation, assigning XRP to payment settlement on the XRP Ledger.

The XRP Ledger is a decentralized network designed to process transactions and transfer value with features aimed at fast settlement. Grayscale noted that XRPL’s features align with settlement use cases and cross-border payment discussions. Ripple, the company associated with XRP’s ecosystem, continues to develop payment products that use the ledger and the token for settlement and liquidity.

Ripple executives have described the sector’s development and potential market size. Reece Merrick compared the growth of crypto payments to the early stages of online commerce. Brad Garlinghouse, Ripple’s CEO, pointed to ‘a $16 trillion annual payments and clearing opportunity’ across businesses tied to the company through acquisitions and noted that digital asset usage represents only a small portion of those flows today.

Grayscale also assigned narratives to other networks, calling bitcoin ‘digital money’, ethereum ‘world computer’, solana ‘high performance’, Hyperliquid ‘onchain trading 24/7’, Chainlink ‘tokenization & oracles’, Sui ‘next gen infrastructure’ and Avalanche ‘mass customization’. The firm offers exchange-traded products tied to the networks it highlighted, including Bitcoin Trust (GBTC), Ethereum Staking ETF (ETHE), XRP Trust ETF (GXRP), Solana Staking ETF (GSOL), Hyperliquid Staking ETF (HYPG), Chainlink Trust ETF (GLNK), Sui Staking ETF (GSUI) and Avalanche Staking ETF (GAVA).

Adoption of XRP for institutional payment use will depend on integration with existing financial systems, activity on the XRP Ledger and demand from banks, payment providers and corporate clients. Grayscale’s classification places XRP into institutional discussions about blockchain-based settlement and cross-border payments.
