Ethereum targets quantum resistance by December 2028
Ethereum researcher Justin Drake said developers hope to complete the network’s post-quantum and post-AI transition by December 2028, a year before the foundation’s deadline.
Ethereum developers hope to complete the network’s post-quantum and post-AI transition by December 2028, according to Ethereum Foundation researcher Justin Drake. The target is one year earlier than the foundation’s current deadline for quantum resistance.
Drake spoke at Devcon 8 in Mumbai on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Developers have 24 months to deliver three additional network upgrades, he said. “Our hope is that by December 2028 we’ll be able to wrap up the full post-quantum and post-AI transition,” Drake said.
The Ethereum Foundation’s roadmap, published in September, sets December 2029 as the deadline for quantum resistance across Ethereum’s execution, consensus and data layers. Drake’s target does not formally change that roadmap, which is scheduled for review in January 2027.
In August, Drake outlined plans for production-ready lean virtual machine, or leanVM, technology in 2027. Under that timeline, Ethereum would deploy post-quantum technology across its three layers in 2028.
Quantum-resistant technology is designed to protect blockchain systems from future quantum computers that could break some cryptographic methods currently used to secure transactions and accounts. The post-AI part of the plan covers broader changes developers are considering for Ethereum’s architecture.
The schedule has drawn criticism from other blockchain developers. In October, the Starknet community backed research into making the network an independent post-quantum layer-1 blockchain. StarkWare CEO Eli Ben-Sasson has described Ethereum’s 2029 target as too late and warned that development deadlines could slip.
