Democrats Take Senate Control After Iowa Victory
Democrat Josh Turek’s Iowa Senate victory gives Democrats and allied independents 51 seats, reshaping the outlook for the stalled CLARITY Act.
Democrats have secured control of the U.S. Senate after Josh Turek won Iowa’s Senate race, giving Democrats and the independent senators who caucus with them a 51-seat majority.
The new majority will determine which lawmakers lead Senate committees overseeing the crypto industry. It could also bring more scrutiny of crypto businesses linked to President Donald Trump and of decisions by financial regulators. Senate control may affect confirmation votes for future presidential nominees to regulatory positions.
The CLARITY Act, which would create a federal framework for digital assets, failed a Senate procedural vote 49-50 in September. If lawmakers do not pass it by January, the next Congress will have to restart the legislative process, requiring the crypto industry to make its case again to lawmakers.
“It’s too early to say exactly what this means for crypto, but one thing is clear: nothing will pass without cross-partisan support,” Jerome de Tychey, president of Ethereum France and co-founder of EthCC, said.
De Tychey said Democratic priorities could strengthen crypto regulation, including conflict-of-interest rules and requirements to protect customers. He pointed to the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, known as MiCA, as an example of rules already used by the industry in Europe.
He warned that crypto policy could become divided along party lines, delaying legislation in the United States. Fred Hsu, co-founder and CEO of D3 and a core contributor to Doma Protocol, said durable regulation would require support from both parties.
“The industry can’t rely on one party to deliver it, and should be making its case to lawmakers on both sides now,” Hsu said in comments provided before the election.
