El Salvador Adds 8 BTC, Reserve Tops 7,689 BTC
El Salvador added 8 BTC in seven days, lifting its national bitcoin reserve to about 7,689 BTC, valued at roughly $490 million.
El Salvador added 8 BTC over the past seven days, bringing its official bitcoin reserve to 7,688.37 BTC, valued at about $490 million at current market prices.
The purchases are recorded in the government’s official bitcoin reserve data. Officials have followed a roughly one-bitcoin-per-day buying cadence, describing the approach on X as “buying the dip, every day.” The accumulation accelerated earlier in 2026 when the government acquired more than 1,600 BTC between January and April.
The reserve is held as a long-term position rather than a trading book, and the government has repeatedly indicated it does not intend to liquidate the holdings. President Nayib Bukele has framed the accumulation as a generational bet and wrote on X that the country “will not sell.”
The purchases have continued despite repeated requests from the International Monetary Fund tied to a $1.4 billion financing arrangement. The IMF has urged El Salvador’s public sector to halt further bitcoin accumulation and has questioned how ongoing purchases align with the terms of the agreement. San Salvador has continued to draw on the IMF program while maintaining its accumulation policy.
The eight-bitcoin increase is small compared with the total reserve, and the reported dollar value of the holdings changes with bitcoin’s market price rather than with the pace of purchases. Last week the reserve passed 7,680 BTC and was valued above $510 million, illustrating the effect of price moves on the dollar valuation.
El Salvador made bitcoin legal tender in 2021. Some rules around the initial rollout were later softened, and government-led accumulation of bitcoin has continued since then.
