Coinbase adds pre-IPO perps, stock options and tokenized stocks
Coinbase will offer pre-IPO perpetual futures, stock options and tokenized stocks, expanding beyond spot crypto, CEO Brian Armstrong announced on X during product week.
Coinbase announced on June 18 that it will offer pre-IPO perpetual futures, stock options and tokenized stocks as part of a product-week rollout. The additions broaden the exchange’s offerings beyond spot cryptocurrency trading.
Pre-IPO perpetual futures let traders take positions tied to private companies before they list on public markets. Stock options provide a standard derivatives instrument for trading or hedging. Tokenized stocks will be blockchain-based representations of equity shares once launched.
The products target active and advanced traders, developers, users of Coinbase’s Base Layer 2 network, and customers of its financial services. Coinbase bought derivatives platform Deribit for $2.9 billion and has begun combining liquidity across U.S. and international users and between Coinbase and Deribit to deepen order books. The company redesigned Coinbase Advanced, its platform for experienced and high-volume traders, to support the expanded product set.
Coinbase introduced business-facing tools for stablecoin payments, including fully custodial business accounts backed by its compliance systems and a new developer dashboard for payments integration. These services are aimed at merchants and developers accepting USD-pegged stablecoins.
Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer 2 network, added private transactions and a web version of the Base App to improve accessibility for consumers and decentralized application developers.
Brian Armstrong linked the product announcements to artificial intelligence initiatives, thanking employees and “their thousands of AI agents” in his post. He wrote, “Coinbase is also becoming the financial account for AI — give your agent a wallet, get AI-powered financial advice, and connect your Coinbase account to your favorite LLM.”
Tokenized stocks are expected to be available soon, while other features are already live or entering staged launches. The releases group trading products, payments tools, Base updates and AI features under a single product cycle.
