Coinbase Bitcoin Premium Hits Monthly Low Amid ETF Outflows
Coinbase’s bitcoin premium fell to -0.085% on May 22, its monthly low, as bitcoin slid to $74,500 and U.S. spot ETFs saw about $1.3 billion in outflows.
The Coinbase bitcoin premium dropped to -0.085% on May 22, its lowest level in a month, according to Coinglass. At the same time, bitcoin traded near $74,500 and U.S. spot bitcoin ETFs recorded roughly $1.3 billion in net outflows for the week.
The Coinbase premium measures the price gap between bitcoin on Coinbase, used mainly by U.S. institutional investors, and bitcoin on Binance, a large global retail exchange. A negative reading means bitcoin was trading cheaper on Coinbase than on Binance, a pattern that reflects heavier selling activity on Coinbase relative to buying.
Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh was sworn in this week and opened with hawkish remarks. Markets began pricing in the possibility of interest-rate increases in 2026 rather than the cuts that had been expected, a shift that market participants cited as a reason for more hedging and profit-taking among institutions.
BlackRock’s iShares bitcoin trust recorded consecutive days of net outflows that extended to six days, totaling more than $1.26 billion. Coinglass data show the Coinbase premium has trended lower for months, indicating reduced institutional accumulation on that platform.
On a single trading session, roughly $209 million in long positions were liquidated. Bitcoin was down more than 4% for the week and about 38% below its all-time high at the time of publication.
Nick Ruck, research director at LVRG, described the pattern as ‘institutional profit-taking and repositioning’ and added it ‘could weigh on near-term price momentum across major crypto assets.’
Market participants said near-term bitcoin moves will depend on further macro signals, including any guidance from the Fed on the future path of interest rates. Traders will also monitor institutional activity on Coinbase and continued ETF flows as indicators of whether selling pressure eases or persists.
