Coinbase AI Alert Falsely Announced Norway Win; Armstrong Probes

On July 5, Coinbase issued an AI-generated notification that incorrectly stated Norway had beaten Brazil 3-2, with two goals attributed to Erling Haaland, before the World Cup knockout match at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey began. The alert reached users while Coinbase’s market page still showed the fixture under a weather delay, and screenshots of the notification circulated on X.

CEO Brian Armstrong acknowledged the reports on X, writing, “Taking a look with the team – thx for reporting it,” and said the company has opened an internal review of how the message was generated and delivered.

Coinbase offers event contracts on its Everything Exchange platform. Market flow at launch was provided by prediction-market operator Kalshi, and the product is available across all 50 U.S. states. The company has promoted prediction markets as part of its business strategy and completed 10 acquisitions in 2025; it is also the first crypto-native firm in the S&P 500.

Sports prediction markets saw high activity during the 2026 World Cup, with tournament prediction volumes topping $3.9 billion.

Regulatory scrutiny has increased: New York state recently sued Coinbase and Gemini over their prediction market offerings, and lawmakers and agencies in Washington are debating how to classify and oversee these products. Coinbase has asked the Commodity Futures Trading Commission to regulate prediction markets under the existing derivatives framework.

Coinbase has not explained how the AI-generated notification bypassed internal checks, whether automated alerts will be paused for the remainder of the World Cup, or what additional safeguards will be put in place. Public statements from the company have been limited to Armstrong’s acknowledgement and the announcement of an internal review.
