ChatGPT adds MoonPay; Coinbase Base builds AI wallet tools

OpenAI added MoonPay integration to ChatGPT, enabling users to start fiat-to-crypto purchases inside a chat. The assistant can create purchase links, explain required steps and guide users through checkout.

Coinbase’s Base is building tools based on a Model Context Protocol (MCP) gateway that let AI assistants call external services, connect to wallets and interact with decentralized applications. MCP provides a standard interface for sequencing the technical steps involved in blockchain operations while keeping conversation context.

The ChatGPT integration and MCP tools allow users to learn about crypto and complete purchases, transfers and other blockchain actions without leaving a conversational interface.

Previously, many users began with exchanges, set up wallets, managed seed phrases and handled gas fees across multiple platforms. Wallet addresses often appeared as long strings, and early chat bots mainly provided price checks and alerts rather than transaction flows.

MCP-based systems can let an assistant carry out multi-step instructions such as sending a token payment, swapping one asset for another, checking a wallet balance or routing a transfer through lower-cost paths by coordinating wallets, bridges and liquidity sources.

Security and trust concerns arise when assistants execute financial actions. Users shift part of their trust from exchanges or wallets to the AI interface. Errors in addresses, token symbols or routing can cause irreversible losses on blockchains where transactions are final.

Participants in the industry have called for controls including strong authentication between assistants and wallet providers, limits on what assistants may do autonomously and safeguards that require users to verify transaction details before execution.

Developers are also working on autonomous AI agents that could manage subscriptions, rebalance portfolios and interact with decentralized finance protocols with limited human input. Those agent projects remain experimental.

OpenAI’s MoonPay integration and Coinbase Base’s MCP development are ongoing. Companies and other participants continue to work on technical connections and user controls to support conversational crypto functionality.
