Buterin revises Ethereum roadmap, prioritizes quantum safety

Vitalik Buterin updated his 2023 Ethereum roadmap to align with the Foundation’s 2029 Strawmap, elevating quantum safety and privacy and adding AI-assisted formal verification and native rollups.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin posted a side-by-side comparison on Monday, updating his 2023 roadmap to match the Ethereum Foundation’s 2029 Strawmap. The revised plan reorders priorities, drops some earlier items and introduces new features reflecting advances in cryptography and developer tools.
Quantum safety was moved ahead of other upgrades. The plan includes work to protect the network from future quantum computers that could break current cryptography, and it places post-quantum scaling near the top of the list with new signature and aggregation methods.
Privacy measures were given higher priority. The Strawmap and Buterin’s revision list tools such as keyed nonces and shielded transaction pools designed to let users limit how much transaction data is publicly visible.
Several 2023 proposals were removed or replaced. Verifiable delay functions and a range of Ethereum Virtual Machine improvements were taken off the revised list. Verkle trees, once proposed to reduce node storage, were replaced by alternative proposals. An earlier idea that would let old account data expire was superseded by new state types that change how balances and activity are tracked.
Formal verification moved up as a key objective. Buterin wrote that recent advances in artificial intelligence make large-scale formal verification more practical, encouraging a leaner, more provable protocol design.
Two features now seen as feasible were not realistic three years ago: native rollups, which would allow certain scaling layers to run inside Ethereum’s base protocol, and blob and gas futures, a market mechanism to price network resources in advance. Buterin noted that cryptographic tools have matured enough to make those concepts viable.
He also raised the long-term possibility of exposing a simpler instruction set for developers, with leanISA and RISC-V mentioned as candidates, but described that idea as premature for inclusion in the Strawmap.
The Strawmap lays out a multi-year planning horizon through 2029. Specific items will enter the Ethereum standard proposal process and require technical readiness, security review and community consensus before deployment. Buterin summarized the objectives: “Ethereum will be quantum safe, will prioritize user privacy, will remain secure and censorship resistant, and will scale while staying lean.” Observers should watch forthcoming improvement proposals and Foundation schedules for timelines on quantum-resistant signatures, rollup integration and privacy tooling.
