Botanix to shut Spiderchain L2; withdraw assets by July 9
Botanix will wind down its Spiderchain Bitcoin Layer-2. Users must withdraw bitcoin and other assets by July 9, 2026 or remaining funds will be swept and unrecoverable.
Botanix announced it will wind down operations of its Spiderchain Bitcoin Layer-2 and set a hard withdrawal deadline of July 9, 2026. Users and developers must remove bitcoin and other digital assets before that date or the network’s federation will sweep remaining funds, making them permanently unrecoverable.
The project launched Spiderchain in 2022 to add native smart-contract capability to Bitcoin without relying on token-driven growth. Botanix reported technical milestones including 25 million organic transactions and integrations with Chainlink and OKX, but said those results did not produce a viable economic model.
In its closure statement, the team pointed to shifts in market behavior and crypto economics as the reason for the wind-down. The announcement said users and capital have concentrated at centralized venues and around major applications that control the customer relationship. It added many users prefer wrapped bitcoin on general-purpose networks because it is cheaper and easier to use.
“Convenience wins, every time,” the announcement read. The team wrote that fee income on its decentralized layer never covered infrastructure costs and that organic users largely used the network as a store of value to earn yield rather than for high-frequency transactions.
Botanix criticized the prevailing token model and noted failed token launches across the industry as evidence that token incentives no longer produce sustainable outcomes. The project had planned a token eventually but chose not to rely on token incentives to drive adoption.
The team said the project’s treasury will be used to support staff and partners through the closure. It highlighted BINK, a bitcoin neobank released for iOS and Android in recent weeks with self-custodial email login and native yield, and said the product arrived too late to change the network’s financial trajectory.
Developers, exchanges and retail users are responsible for migrating assets off Spiderchain before July 9, 2026. After that date the federation’s sweep will render any remaining funds permanently unrecoverable. The shutdown concludes Botanix’s four-year effort to build a decentralized smart-contract layer on Bitcoin without relying on token incentives.
