Bitcoin Policy Institute Joins State Dept. Freedom Tech Program
The Bitcoin Policy Institute will be a founding partner in the U.S. State Department’s Freedom Tech Excellence Program to support work on online expression, privacy tools and countering digital surveillance.
The Bitcoin Policy Institute will join the U.S. State Department’s new Freedom Tech Excellence Program (FTEP) as a founding partner, the institute wrote on X. The post said its employees will “work alongside state department experts and defend digital freedoms around the world.”
FTEP’s initial founding partners include Palantir Technologies, Anduril Industries and the Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation alongside the Bitcoin Policy Institute. The State Department described the program as a way to bring private sector talent into the agency for short-term assignments.
According to the State Department, FTEP will place private sector experts with the department for limited-term assignments to “advance diplomatic efforts on key issues including online freedom of expression, privacy-enhancing technologies, countering digital surveillance, and responsible AI governance.” The assignments will support diplomatic work both overseas and in Washington.
Participants are expected to help on policy and program efforts related to online speech, privacy tools, digital surveillance and governance of artificial intelligence. The program is intended to connect technical and policy expertise from industry and civil society with diplomatic initiatives.
The Bitcoin Policy Institute was founded in 2021 as a nonpartisan research and advocacy organization focused on Bitcoin policy. Since its creation, the group has backed proposals to turn a March 2025 presidential executive order establishing a strategic crypto reserve into statute. As of July 2026, Congress had not passed legislation to implement that executive order.
Palantir and Anduril are technology firms that supply tools used by governments and corporate clients. The Victims of Communism Memorial Foundation is a nonprofit that focuses on historical memory and related policy issues. The State Department framed FTEP as project-based placements designed to bring outside expertise into diplomatic work on technology and human rights.
