Balogun 98% to Play After FIFA Suspends Red Card

FIFA has suspended enforcement of Folarin Balogun’s red card under Article 27 of its disciplinary code, making the U.S. forward eligible to be named in the matchday squad while the case is reviewed. The decision prompted heavy activity on prediction markets, where a Polymarket contract that resolves “Yes” if Balogun appears as a starter or substitute jumped to an implied 98% probability and has drawn nearly $300,000 in trading volume.

The market specifies that any appearance on the field as part of the starting lineup or as a substitute will qualify. It states resolution will be based on official FIFA information or, if necessary, a consensus of credible reporting.

Balogun received the red card in an earlier tournament match, triggering a standard suspension. FIFA’s use of Article 27 allows enforcement of the ban to be postponed for up to a year while further procedures continue; the suspension does not amount to an exoneration.

Former President Donald Trump acknowledged contacting FIFA president Gianni Infantino to request a review of the ban and denied applying pressure. Infantino confirmed the exchange and emphasized that “FIFA’s judicial bodies are independent. They operate autonomously, apply the FIFA Disciplinary Code, and decide cases based on the applicable regulations and the specific facts before them.”

The Royal Belgian Football Association formally challenged Balogun’s eligibility, writing that it “contests the eligibility of the player, should the player be listed on the referee’s team sheet,” and leaving open the possibility of further actions. That challenge could lead to appeals or disciplinary steps before kickoff if Balogun is listed on the U.S. team sheet. The U.S. coaching staff has not confirmed the matchday lineup.

Market operators and traders noted the contract’s clear definition of a qualifying appearance shaped betting patterns. They said official FIFA communications will govern resolution, though credible reporting may be used if required. The case remains subject to FIFA procedures and potential legal or disciplinary steps ahead of the United States’ Round of 16 match against Belgium.
