Arkham tags Roswell’s 0.173 BTC reserve in alien meme

Arkham Intelligence posted a satirical image on May 26, 2026, tying Roswell, New Mexico’s UFO history to the City of Roswell government’s onchain bitcoin holding of 0.173 BTC, roughly $13,000. The post linked directly to Arkham’s blockchain explorer entry for the city, where the wallet balance and transaction history are displayed and publicly verifiable on the bitcoin blockchain.

The image carried the headline-style line “ALIENS ARE BUYING BITCOIN,” paired with an alien photo and a network visualizer showing inflows to a wallet labeled “City of Roswell.” The post attracted about 81,000 views, 810 likes and 149 replies, many of them meme images and jokes. Arkham’s explorer shows a holdings history chart, inflow transactions and the linked bitcoin address tied to the city’s reserve.

Roswell launched the municipal bitcoin reserve in April 2025 after an anonymous donation of roughly 0.0305 BTC, valued at about $2,900 to $3,000 at the time. Additional donations over subsequent months increased the reserve past $5,000 and to its current level near $13,000. Mayor Pro Tem Juliana Halvorson signed a ceremonial receipt acknowledging the initial gift, which made the funds an official part of the city treasury.

City officials set a ten-year mandatory holding period for bitcoin placed in the municipal reserve and designated the asset as a store of value rather than operational cash. The policy sets a $1 million target for the reserve; once that target is reached, proceeds are earmarked primarily for senior citizen programs, including water bill subsidies, and for disaster relief or emergency funds. The city council may authorize the release of up to 21% of holdings every five years to address declared disasters, subject to unanimous council approval.
