Algorand targets quantum-resistant network by 2027

Algorand will add Falcon-based accounts and upgrade consensus cryptography to reach broad quantum resistance by end of 2027, the Algorand Foundation plans.

The Algorand Foundation released a roadmap to update the Algorand layer-1 blockchain by the end of 2027 to achieve broad resistance to future quantum computers. The plan highlights new Falcon-based account types and changes to the cryptography used in consensus.

The roadmap specifies new account types that use the Falcon signature scheme, designed to resist attacks by quantum-capable machines, and an overhaul of the chain’s consensus cryptography. The foundation is also studying a hybrid approach that would combine classical and quantum-resistant signatures during a transition and is revising how accounts that participate in consensus will operate.

Bruno Martins, the foundation’s technology chief, noted: “Governments, standards bodies, and security experts around the world are already preparing for a future where quantum computers may break many of the cryptographic systems that protect today’s digital infrastructure.”

The foundation set the deadline for completing the infrastructure changes by the end of 2027. Several technical choices remain under research, including specific implementation details for consensus updates and account migration. Engineers aim to limit user disruption while adding protections against potential quantum-enabled attacks.

A technical paper by Google researchers indicated that fewer quantum resources may be required to break blockchain cryptography than earlier estimates suggested, and it identified Algorand as among the more prepared networks. Other blockchains, including Ethereum and Solana, are exploring their own approaches to quantum resistance.

National agencies have announced timelines that affect industry planning. France’s cybersecurity agency ANSSI intends to stop certifying security products that lack quantum-resistant encryption by 2030. The U.S. National Security Agency requires new national security systems to use its quantum-resistant algorithms starting Jan. 1, 2027, and calls for nonquantum-resistant systems to be phased out by the end of 2030. Google has set an internal readiness target of 2029.

Several crypto projects have published or launched quantum-resilience work. Tezos introduced a prototype payments chain designed to resist quantum attacks, and Circle published a roadmap to make its Arc blockchain quantum-ready. Research from the California Institute of Technology has suggested a practical quantum computer capable of attacking current cryptography could require fewer resources than previously believed.

The Algorand Foundation plans to release more technical details as design choices are finalized and implementation work progresses.
