The hacker shared a link for a supposed free NFT giveaway from Consensys, tricking users into connecting their wallets and subsequently stealing all their NFTs. According to ZachXBT, the incident led to losses of over $691,000. Speculations suggest it might be related to a SIM card swap. Shortly after the breach, Buterin's father wrote:
“Disregard this post, apparently Vitalik has been hacked. He is working on restoring access.”
Ethereum co-founder has raised four primary concerns of Worldcoin: privacy, accessibility, centralization, and security.
While Worldcoin's Proof-of-Personhood (PoP) system is designed to authenticate unique users without revealing personal data, Buterin warns that any data leak could lead to misuse of identity information. He also points out that accessibility is an issue, as participation requires physical access to a device called "Orb," potentially limiting the project's reach. Lastly, he mentions security risks such as phone hacking and coercion to scan irises.
Despite these concerns, Buterin does see the value in the concept of Worldcoin, and suggests a combination of social-graph-based, general-hardware biometric, and specialized-hardware biometric techniques as a potential solution.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has teamed up with India-based crypto fund Crypto Relief and Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal to contribute a substantial sum of $100 million towards COVID-19 research and the development of medical infrastructure in India.
Recognizing the ongoing threat of COVID-19 and potential future pandemics, Buterin took to Twitter on June 8th to highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive global solution. He emphasized the importance of combining cutting-edge scientific innovation with effective on-the-ground implementation to address these challenges head-on.
The generous donation will be directed towards critical areas of research, with a particular focus on studying COVID-19 airborne transmission and advancing the development of improved medical equipment.
By prioritizing these aspects, the initiative aims to enhance understanding and mitigation strategies, ultimately curbing the spread of the virus and improving healthcare outcomes for affected individuals. Vitalik Buterin Warns Against Overloading Ethereum's Consensus
In a comprehensive blog post titled "Don't overload Ethereum's consensus" Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has shed light on the potential dangers of extending Ethereum's consensus beyond its fundamental role of validating blocks and securing the network.
The company Blockaid preemptively identified a perilous phishing website targeting Ethereum's co-founder admirers, even before Buterin's account was hacked.
This was attested by MetaMask, who also pointed out the integration of Blockaid's anti-phishing solution within their wallet for enhanced user protection.
Buterin explained that he has successfully recovered control of his T-Mobile account, which the hacker had compromised through this method. The co-founder of Ethereum also shared some valuable lessons gained from his experience: “I had seen the “phone numbers are insecure, don’t authenticate with them” advice before, but did not realize this”. Removing phone numbers from X accounts and having 2FA enabled is a way to protect yourself from SIM-swap attack.
After the announcement that MakerDAO intends to roll out a new version of its platform on Solana, Anatoly Yakovenko suggested this shouldn't be viewed as a challenge to Ethereum. In his perspective, MakerDAO's move accentuates the merits of open-source solutions rather than the superiority of one blockchain over another, especially given Ethereum's pivotal role in research for numerous developers. "Ethereum is awesome. Solana wasn’t built in a vacuum, and tons and tons of things that make Solana special were built based on Ethereum’s r&d," commented the Solana co-founder. Meanwhile, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has sold all his MKR tokens for 353 ETH.
It appears that Mark and Elon aren’t the only ones itching for a showdown.
Following Buterin’s critique of Solana for its scalability being hampered by centralization and significant computational requirements, the community urged Solana’s creator to challenge Buterin to a duel.
However, in a display of true intellectual spirit, Anatoly Yakovenko (Solana) suggested an alternative — a game of chess with Buterin.
The Ethereum founder has not commented on this proposal yet.
