Yield Guild Shuts YGG Play, Cuts 35 Jobs to Pivot to AI

Yield Guild Games will retire YGG Play, its website, launchpad and games by Aug. 1, cut 35 jobs and shift resources to package gaming behavioral data for AI training.

Yield Guild Games announced on July 6, 2026 that it will close YGG Play, retire the unit’s website, token launchpad and hosted titles by Aug. 1, and eliminate 35 positions as it reallocates resources to supply gaming-derived datasets for AI training.

Games to be retired include LOL Land and Waifu Sweeper. Two titles that were on the platform, Gigachatbat and Ragnarok Breaker, will continue to operate under their original developers after a transition. Yield Guild said affected employees will receive eight additional weeks of pay and assistance finding new roles.

YGG Play was launched in 2025 to publish casual crypto-infused games. The unit released LOL Land as a proof of concept, signed nine other games, partnered with the Pudgy Penguins NFT brand and ran a token launchpad. Yield Guild reported more than $9 million in lifetime revenue for the publishing arm through the first quarter of 2026 and described the crypto market downturn and weaknesses in the wider video-game sector as reasons the unit had become commercially unsustainable.

The company reported a treasury of $20.6 million in assets as of the first quarter of 2026 and said that amount should extend its operating runway to about four years following the restructuring. Yield Guild intends to repurpose capital and staff to package behavioral data generated by players — including in-game choices and actions — for sale to AI developers as training datasets.

Yield Guild’s native YGG token has fallen roughly 84% over the past year and remains far below its 2021 peak. The crypto gaming sector has seen multiple project closures since early 2025 and a drop in venture investment in studios working on blockchain-based games.

Yield Guild became prominent during the 2021 play-to-earn period by supporting Axie Infinity through a scholarship program that lent NFT game assets to players in exchange for a share of in-game earnings. After Axie Infinity’s collapse in 2022, the company shifted toward building blockchain infrastructure for gaming guilds in 2024 before launching YGG Play in 2025.

Co-founder Gabby Dizon wrote, “Sunsetting YGG Play is a heavy decision, but it is a market decision, not a product decision.” He added the company is proud of the team’s work and remains committed to using technology to expand economic opportunities while supporting employees through the transition.
