Tom Lee’s BitMine Logs $7.3B ETH Loss; Could Top $10B
BitMine holds 5.28 million ETH and faces about $7.3 billion in unrealized losses after Ether’s 57% drop; a further 25% slide to $1,600 would push losses above $10 billion.
BitMine, the publicly traded firm led by Tom Lee, holds 5.28 million ether and is carrying roughly $7.3 billion in unrealized losses after Ether fell about 57% from its October 2025 peak near $4,955. The company began building its Ethereum treasury in July 2025 following a $250 million private placement and disclosed an initial holding of 163,142 ETH by mid-July. The current position equals about 4.37% of Ethereum’s total supply and reflects an average purchase price near $3,513.
Technical analysis of Ether shows a rising wedge pattern. A confirmed breakdown below the wedge’s lower trend line would imply a measured move toward about $1,600, roughly 25% below recent levels and potentially occurring by mid-summer. If Ether reaches $1,600, BitMine’s unrealized losses on its reported holdings and average cost would widen to about $10.1 billion. A rebound from the wedge base would correspond with a recovery toward roughly $2,530, near the 200-day exponential moving average.
Market indicators have weakened alongside price action. Ether’s share of the broader cryptocurrency market has declined to about 10% from roughly 15% in August 2025. Social-media sentiment toward ETH moved from a bullish bias in late April to roughly equal bullish and bearish commentary in May. The asset has also seen persistent outflows from exchange-traded funds and several departures from the Ethereum Foundation.
BitMine continued accumulating ETH through the drawdown. In February, Lee framed the steep decline as a potential buying opportunity, citing historical instances when Ethereum recovered after drops exceeding 50%. In May, the company reported it would slow the pace of purchases but kept a target of owning 5% of Ethereum’s total supply by December.
The company’s public dashboard details its ether treasury and shows how unrealized gains and losses vary with price moves. The accumulation strategy increases exposure to further volatility: continued declines would expand unrealized losses, while price recoveries would reduce them.
All investments carry risk. Changes in Ether’s price would alter the size of BitMine’s unrealized losses or gains.
