Strategy’s MSTR and STRC hit 52-week lows as Bitcoin falls
MSTR dropped as much as 9.35% to $94.13, touching $92.28 intraday; preferred STRC fell 7.41% to $80.84 as Bitcoin slid below $60,000.
Strategy’s common shares (MSTR) and preferred shares (STRC) fell to fresh 52-week lows on Wednesday after Bitcoin slipped below $60,000. MSTR fell as much as 9.35% to $94.13 and hit an intraday low of $92.28. STRC dropped 7.41% to $80.84.
Bitcoin fell to about $59,200 intraday before recovering later in the session toward $61,000. After markets closed, MSTR and STRC recovered some ground as stronger-than-expected corporate earnings from a major chipmaker lifted stock futures and wider market sentiment.
STRC traded well below its $100 par value. Strategy has used the preferred shares as part of financing for corporate Bitcoin purchases. On Monday, the company completed a roughly $300 million cash raise aimed at shoring up the preferred class; STRC printed a new low three days later.
A decline in Strategy’s equity value reduces the company’s flexibility to issue new stock or raise capital, which affects options for covering debt or acquiring additional Bitcoin. The company reports substantial Bitcoin holdings and available cash that covers a portion of upcoming debt obligations. Some analysts estimate current reserves cover roughly ten months of debt service.
Market flows showed outflows from cryptocurrency-linked funds on Wednesday. Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded about $469 million in net outflows, the largest three-week decline, while ether ETFs had roughly $30 million in outflows. Major tokens were down roughly 3% during the session.
Trader Travis Kling posted on social media: ‘there would be a group of sophisticated, deep-pocketed BTC bulls that are currently trying to figure out how to collapse the MSTR cap structure by any means necessary, so as to force a puke of the BTC currently held.’
Both MSTR and STRC regained some value after hours but remained well below levels seen earlier in the year. The declines underscore the sensitivity of Strategy’s equity and preferred shares to moves in the price of Bitcoin and to changes in investor demand for crypto-linked securities.
