South Korea Arrests Man Over AI Image That Delayed Wolf Rescue

A 40-year-old was arrested after posting an AI-generated photo that fooled Daejeon officials, triggered emergency alerts and delayed capture of escaped wolf Neukgu by up to nine days.

Daejeon Metropolitan Police arrested a 40-year-old man after he posted an AI-generated photo claiming to show Neukgu, a wolf that escaped from O-World zoo. The image was convincing enough to prompt a citywide emergency text and to be shown at an official press briefing, officials said.

Neukgu, a two-year-old male wolf weighing about 30 kilograms and part of a program to restore the Korean wolf, dug out of its enclosure on April 8. Hours after the escape, a manipulated image circulated online that appeared to show a light-brown wolf at an intersection near the zoo.

Authorities say the fake image slowed search efforts and delayed the wolf’s recapture by as many as nine days. The extended deployment of police, firefighters and other emergency personnel disrupted their routine duties, police added.

The city mobilized hundreds of firefighters, police officers and soldiers with drones and thermal cameras to search for Neukgu. A nearby elementary school closed during the hunt. President Lee Jae Myung offered a public prayer for the wolf’s safe return.

Neukgu was recaptured on April 17 after officers received a tip about a sighting in a park near an expressway. Since the recapture, the wolf has drawn local attention, including a meme coin inspired by the animal.

Daejeon police charged the unnamed suspect with obstructing official duties by deception for “distributing fabricated wolf sighting images created using generative AI.” When questioned, he told investigators he posted the image “just for fun.” If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison or a fine of 10 million Korean won, about $6,700.

Investigators used surveillance camera analysis and AI detection software to trace and identify the person who circulated the fabricated image. Police warned that AI-generated visuals can spread quickly and may misdirect official responses during emergencies.

The case records the sequence of the escape, the circulation of the manipulated image and the resulting search operations, the charges against the suspect, and the wolf’s eventual recapture.
