Mastercard, Borderless pilot identity checks for stablecoins

Mastercard and Borderless will pilot shared identity checks and machine-readable assurance signals for cross-border stablecoin transfers using Mastercard’s Crypto Credential.

Mastercard and Borderless will run a pilot to test shared identity checks and machine-readable assurance signals for cross-border stablecoin transfers. The test uses Mastercard’s Crypto Credential framework to provide governance and verification signals that parties can consume in their compliance and risk systems.

The pilot will assess whether a common set of standards can give banks, payment providers and other intermediaries enough information to approve, monitor and assess transactions without repeated rechecks at each counterparty.

Mastercard’s framework attaches standardized assurance signals to blockchain transactions so counterparties can read the information automatically rather than rely on manual checks or duplicate reviews.

Kevin Lehtiniitty, Borderless chief executive, compared the approach to correspondent banking: “Correspondent banking solved the problem of trusting originating compliance downstream by avoiding re-execution at every counterparty. Mastercard is applying that model to digital asset payments.” The announcement states Mastercard will not process or settle funds in the pilot; the Crypto Credential will act as a governance and verification layer during testing.

The pilot follows Mastercard’s recent acquisition of stablecoin infrastructure firm BVNK for $1.8 billion. Mastercard has also announced plans to expand card settlement to include intraday, weekend and holiday settlement and to support settlements using several stablecoins, including USDC, PYUSD, USDG, USDP, RLUSD and SoFiUSD.

The project will evaluate whether downstream participants can accept originating compliance claims based on the assurance signals and reduce repeated verification steps. Results will guide further development of the Crypto Credential standard and potential industry adoption of shared identity and governance signals for tokenized payment flows.
