Hyperliquid whale opens $70M short on HYPE and BTC
A Hyperliquid account tied to developer Loracle opened about $70 million in short positions, including $49 million on HYPE and $12.5 million against Bitcoin.
An on-chain trading and derivatives record shows a Hyperliquid account tied to an early developer called Loracle, using the address 0x8def…992dae, opened roughly $70 million in short positions across cryptocurrencies and synthetic tech-stock tokens this week. The trades were placed on Hyperliquid’s synthetic markets.
Trade data breaks down the new positions as about $49 million short in HYPE tokens, $12.5 million short in Bitcoin, and roughly $8 million in synthetic tokens linked to a chipmaker (Sandisk) and the Nasdaq-100 index. The same address holds a $1.7 million long in a gold-backed stablecoin.
Historical records for the account show about $42 million in aggregate profits from earlier trades. Recent closed positions include a $9.2 million profit from a multi-asset long in Bitcoin, Zcash and Toncoin, and a $3 million gain from a nine-day oil-linked synthetic trade.
Platform and on-chain data indicate an algorithmic trading pattern for the account. Positions tracked on app.trade.xyz typically lasted less than a week, and the account increased trading activity beginning in September 2025.
The new shorts were opened as Bitcoin fell below the $80,000 level and Brent crude traded above $100 a barrel. Brent’s recent rise has been linked to supply disruptions related to the conflict in Iran. Data from the St. Louis Federal Reserve show the Fed has added bonds and mortgage-backed securities to its balance sheet in recent sessions. U.S. Treasury yields and short-term interest rates moved higher in the same period.
Hyperliquid’s platform allows tokenized exposure to cryptocurrencies, commodities and equity-linked assets and supports leveraged long and short positions. The account’s mix of large short positions, continued gold-stablecoin exposure and a record of short-duration trades reflects its current portfolio activity on that platform.
