Google launches Gemini Spark, 24/7 AI agent for Gmail

Google launched Gemini Spark, a cloud-based AI agent that runs 24/7, integrates with Gmail, Docs and Slides, drafts follow-ups and can place orders via OpenTable and Instacart.

Google unveiled Gemini Spark at I/O 2026, a cloud-based personal AI agent that runs continuously and connects to Gmail, Google Docs and Slides to monitor inboxes, draft follow-ups and carry out tasks on users’ behalf.

Spark runs on Gemini 3.5 and uses Google’s Antigravity agent infrastructure. The agent operates on dedicated Google virtual machines so it can continue working when a phone or laptop is locked or offline. Google described the agent as able to perform recurring work, surface items that need attention and complete routine tasks in the background.

Examples provided by the company include scanning monthly credit card statements for new subscriptions, tracking school emails for deadlines and assembling meeting notes scattered across Gmail and Docs into a single document with follow-up messages sent for the user.

Spark ships with native support for Gmail, Docs, Slides and the wider Google Workspace suite. Starting today it also includes MCP connections to Canva, OpenTable and Instacart, which allow the agent to book a restaurant or place a grocery order rather than only drafting messages about those actions.

Google said more capabilities are planned this summer, including the ability to text and email Spark directly, create custom sub-agents for specific workflows and grant the agent permission to operate a user’s local browser. A macOS desktop version that can access local files is also scheduled to arrive later.

Users can teach Spark custom skills by setting preferences and workflows so the agent handles tasks in a preferred way. The company included a disclaimer in the public release that the agent “may do things like share your info or make purchases without asking.” Google noted Spark is designed to request permission before high-stakes actions and advised users to supervise its behavior.

References to Gemini Spark and earlier internal names such as “Gemini Agent” and the codename “Remy” appeared in a recent Android beta, confirming details before the announcement. The initial release is limited access: trusted testers receive access this week and U.S. subscribers to the Google AI Ultra plan will get beta access next week. Google is reducing the AI Ultra subscription price from $250 to $200 per month for those customers.

Google reported that the Gemini app has more than 900 million monthly users. The company described Spark as an always-on agent for users of the app. Further feature and platform expansion is planned over the coming months.
