FIFA World Cup Drives 60,000+ Ticket Transactions on Avalanche
FIFA World Cup generated more than 60,000 ‘Right to Buy’ ticket transactions on Avalanche, boosting transaction volume up to 24x and active addresses about 10x before the tournament.
More than 60,000 “Right to Buy” (RTB) ticket transactions for the FIFA World Cup were recorded on the Avalanche blockchain in the days before the tournament, driving transaction volume up to 24 times normal levels and increasing active addresses roughly tenfold.
FIFA offered RTB tokens through FIFA Connect, a digital platform built on Avalanche that allows some ticketing settlements to occur on-chain. For the event, FIFA deployed a dedicated engagement-oriented layer 1 chain on Avalanche to handle ticket-related activity and large transaction volumes.
Arielle Pennington, senior vice president of growth at Avalanche, reported that those ticketing interactions produced “more than 60,000 transactions on Avalanche” over a short span and that the spike happened before the tournament began. She added that transaction volume rose “as much as 24x above normal levels” and active addresses grew “roughly 10x.”
RTB tokens function as digital reservations that give holders the right to buy match tickets through FIFA’s official sales process. Organizers expect the tournament to draw more than 3.5 million stadium attendees, and some ticket settlements were moved on-chain to manage high demand and provide traceability.
Regulators have scrutinized the blockchain-based ticketing. In October, Swiss gambling regulator Gespa filed a complaint alleging the tokens could constitute illegal gambling services. U.S. probes were opened by New York Attorney General Letitia James and New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport to examine whether FIFA’s sale and distribution of the digital assets comply with local laws.
FIFA and Avalanche have continued on-chain settlements and RTB sales while ticketing operations and regulatory reviews proceed in multiple jurisdictions. Pennington noted that users tend to choose services for speed, reliability, security, transparency and global accessibility, and that many fans interacting with the ticketing system will not be aware of the underlying blockchain technology.
