Farage Bought £1.4M Home After £5M Crypto Gift

Nigel Farage bought a £1.4 million home in May 2024 after receiving a £5 million cryptocurrency gift from Christopher Harborne, prompting a UK parliamentary inquiry.

Nigel Farage purchased a £1.4 million property in May 2024 after receiving a £5 million personal gift in cryptocurrency from Christopher Harborne. The property deal closed several weeks before Farage announced his run in the general election.

The transfer, valued at about £5 million (roughly $6.7 million), occurred before Farage returned to frontline politics. Farage and the Reform Party maintain the gift was personal and received prior to taking public office, so it was not subject to the reporting rules that apply to donations or gifts received while serving in Parliament. Critics contend that once Farage assumed office he should have recorded the earlier gift in the parliamentary register of interests.

Parliamentary authorities have opened an inquiry to examine the transfer and whether it should have been declared. The investigation will review the timing of the gift, its source and whether current disclosure rules were followed.

Lawmakers have also raised concerns about political donations made in cryptocurrency. In February 2025, Matt Western, chair of the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy, urged a temporary ban on crypto donations to parties and political figures, citing risks of foreign influence linked to a worsening security environment and the UK’s expanding military role in Europe.

In March, the government advanced a legislative proposal to impose a temporary ban on political crypto donations. The measure must still pass both houses of Parliament and receive royal assent to become law. Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared the government would “act decisively to protect our democracy” while pursuing steps to limit political funding through digital assets.

Farage has defended the transaction and argued the gift was personal and given before he returned to frontline politics. The Reform Party has said it will oppose bans or temporary moratoriums on crypto political donations.

The parliamentary inquiry will determine whether any reporting breaches occurred and may lead to recommendations on disclosure rules or enforcement. The case is one of several recent actions in Parliament examining how to regulate political donations made in cryptocurrency and how existing transparency rules apply to digital-asset transfers.
