Ethereum Foundation outlines 2026 priorities: gas limit scaling and “quantum readiness”

The Ethereum Foundation has outlined its core goals for 2026 – from raising the gas limit and speeding up transactions to preparing the network for the challenges of the quantum era.

The Ethereum Foundation has outlined its protocol priorities for 2026, defining four key areas: faster transactions, increased gas limits, improved cross-network interoperability, and long-term preparation for quantum-era threats. The organization described the past year as one of the most productive in recent memory: the community raised the gas limit from 30 to 60 million, while the Pectra and Fusaka upgrades significantly expanded network throughput.

The foundation reaffirmed its intention to continue scaling the gas limit “to 100 million and beyond.” The topic has been widely debated in the community: some developers argue that Ethereum can support higher load ceilings without compromising stability. Several experts have already called a target of 180 million units by 2026 realistic.

A separate emphasis is placed on quantum security. The Ethereum Foundation announced the creation of a dedicated Post-Quantum team that will work over the coming years on mechanisms for long-term protection against quantum computing threats. One of the key milestones is the upcoming Glamsterdam upgrade, scheduled for the first half of 2026.

The foundation also plans to focus more heavily on user experience in 2026. Priorities include expanding smart wallets built on native account abstraction and improving L1–L2 interoperability. The goal is near-seamless cross-L2 operations, faster confirmations, and shorter finality times on layer 2.

Beyond technical work, the Ethereum Foundation reaffirmed its commitment to building the ecosystem around AI. This aligns with recent comments from Vitalik Buterin, who suggested using AI to strengthen security, improve efficiency across crypto networks, and enhance user autonomy.
