e-cash.org Registered 29 Days Before bitcoin.org

e-cash.org was registered July 20, 2008, 29 days before bitcoin.org. WHOIS shows a privacy-protected Dynadot registration created in 2008 and renewed through July 20, 2028.

WHOIS records independently verified April 25, 2026, show e-cash.org was registered July 20, 2008, exactly 29 days before bitcoin.org, which was registered Aug. 18, 2008.

The domain was registered through Dynadot Inc., registrar IANA ID 472, and carries a clientTransferProhibited status. Registrant contact details are redacted through Dynadot’s privacy service. Records show a maintenance update on Feb. 28, 2026, and an expiration date of July 20, 2028.

The registration date falls inside the period when the Bitcoin protocol was being finalized. On Aug. 22, 2008, a draft file named ecash.pdf was privately shared with cryptographer Wei Dai. On Oct. 31, 2008, the final paper was posted to the Cryptography Mailing List under the subject ‘Bitcoin P2P e-cash paper.’ The published paper describes Bitcoin as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system.

Researcher Gwern Branwen documented the registration and related 2008 correspondence in archived notes. The domain name e-cash.org matches the ecash filename used in the private draft and the mailing list subject line. The domain was registered through a privacy service, a pattern also used for the bitcoin.org registration.

Archived web captures show the domain did not host substantive Bitcoin-related content. There is no cryptographic signature, signed statement, or other documentary record publicly tying Satoshi Nakamoto to e-cash.org.

Interest in the domain increased after Bitcoin developer Paul Sztorc announced a planned hard fork called “eCash” scheduled for August 2026 with a proposed 1:1 BTC split. The announcement led to renewed checks of historical domain records and early crypto archives.

Public records show the domain has been renewed through 2028 and that no public owner has been identified in roughly 18 years.
