Crypto M&A Hits $7.23B as Active Investors Fall to 651

Cryptorank data shows crypto M&A funding rose to $7.23 billion in Q2 2026 while active investors dropped to 651, the lowest quarterly level since 2020.

Cryptorank reported crypto mergers and acquisitions funding reached $7.23 billion in the second quarter of 2026, even as the number of active crypto investors fell to 651 during the same period.

The analytics firm’s data shows unique investor participation peaked at 2,564 in 2022 and declined to 651 in Q2 2026. Quarterly investor counts in 2020 ranged roughly between 250 and 450.

M&A funding increased sharply over three consecutive quarters. Capital deployed through M&A rose from $272 million in Q4 2025 to $2.14 billion in Q1 2026, and then to $7.23 billion in Q2 2026, a more than 26-fold increase in six months. M&A accounted for about 15.36% of tracked fundraising rounds in the quarter.

Dealmaking in May drove much of the quarterly total. Cryptorank recorded $5.55 billion of crypto M&A activity in May, led by Bullish’s $4.2 billion acquisition of Equiniti. In April, M&A accounted for 48.6% of disclosed capital despite only six deals; in May it comprised 58% of disclosed capital.

The firm’s data shows a shift toward larger, later-stage transactions. Series C and later-stage financing increased while early-stage activity slowed. By sector, payments led by value; prediction markets accounted for 17.6% of capital and took the largest share of mature capital; decentralized finance led by deal count with 57 rounds. In May, prediction markets raised about $1.2 billion and artificial intelligence-themed projects recorded 17 rounds.

Venture firm activity concentrated among a smaller set of investors. Andreessen Horowitz’s a16z crypto completed nine deals in May, followed by Coinbase Ventures and Animoca Brands with seven deals each. Cryptorank attributed the shift to a concentration of capital among specialist funds, corporate buyers and strategic investors with longer time horizons.
